Shan States are located in Eastern Burma along the Chinese, Thai and Lao borders ("Golden Triangle").
The Shan peoples are ethnically related to the Thai and often called "Tai".
A "Shan National Army" was organized in 1961 to fight the Burmese and to create an independent country. The army collapsed in the mid 1960's, but other groups are still  forming.
