Normal monthly expenditure of the Leper Colony was 25.000 Pesos, most of which was obtained directly from Manila
At outbreak of the war supply of money became difficult, and funds were soon exhausted. In a public meeting the issue of a local scrip was decided.
These scrips were accepted with reluctance, and an appeal was made to president Quezon who telegraphed back on 09.02.1942:
"If necessary, issue notes for payment of salaries and other expenses. These notes will be redeemed by government later."
