40 million notes were printed and shipped to Turkey on the British SS "City of Roubaix", which was sunk at Piraeus, Greece on 16.04.1941 by German warplanes. The notes washed up on the beach and were collected by the public. Upon learning of the incident, the Turkish Prime Ministry issued a decree abolishing their validity. The Greeks returned the remainder of the notes recovered from the sunken ship to the Republic of Turkey.
