TURKEY P-130
(TURKEY P-130 shows the portrait of Kemal Atatürk)
These notes were on the SS "City of Roubaix" when it was sunk by German
warplanes in Piraeus (Greece).
Notes that escaped confiscation were introduced by Greek and non-Muslim
tradesmen and put into circulation in eastern provinces where the means of
communication were poor. The variety of notes confused the public who were
not in a position to be able to tell if they were legitimate or not.
These notes exchanged hands among the public unofficially.
Up through 1945, the government in Ankara had great difficulty withdrawing
these notes from circulation. |
